argument essay

Is Bowling A Sport?

Is bowling a sport? Some people may not think it is. Why, is because they see it as just a hobby. Then there are some people that may not bowl well and automatically think it isn’t a sport. They will just think of it as something to do on your free time with friends. This is all true but I can explain why it is a sport.

Bowling is a sport because they have their own sets of rules. One rule is, you aren’t allowed to use your phone because it could be seen as a distraction. It may seem like a really dumb rule but it really isn’t. If you use your phone you aren’t focusing on your mental game. It’s been proven that people who use their phones while they bowl can get worse scores. Especially if you are bowling in a tournament, if you’re using your phone and you may be up to bowl and you are texting; you are slowing down the pace and you make the other bowlers fall behind. To some bowlers it’s very important to go at a steady pace.

Another rule is that you cannot take pictures. If somebody would be up on the lane about to bowl and he/she is about to release the ball; you take a picture with flash it could completely throw off your concentration and you could roll a bad shot. This is especially a no-no in the PBA (Professional Bowling Association) for that reason exactly. You can get thrown out of the bowling center if you do that. They take their tournaments seriously.

Some people may also think that its impossible to get injuries. Well I can tell you that is is possible. There have ctually been a total of 6 fatalities in the sport of bowling. They all have happened in the bowling alley as well. They either had conjestive heart failure, heartr attack and on one account someone had a stroke. These were all middleage adults. Between the ages of 25-46. Though one was in his mid 60’s when he had a heart attack. Though when youy think about it, the most common injuries in bowling have to do with your arm.

For kids the biggest type of injury is the finger. Why, is because whenever the kids bowl, they down have full control of their bodies so they could pull or jerk the wrong way and do something wacky to their fingers. For the typical injury diagnosis the biggest factgor that could injure a kid is fracture or dislocations because as youths and above our bones are much stronger than what kids are from 7 years and below. So its more common seeing a fracture or dislocation for kids bowlers. For their mechanics the most problems kids have with bowling is dropping their bowling ball. They don’t know how to quite control the bowling ball yet so its more common for them to drop their bowling balls.

For the youth age between 7-18 years old the most common body injury is the finger as well. As bowlers get older they are introduced into what is called the fingertip grip. Its weird to get use to so you could easily pull your finger out of socket if you don’t be careful. The type of injury diagnosis is a strrain/sprain. Its easy to do this if you arent bowling correctly. And the most common mechanical injuries they have are also droppingthe ball. Though they can be more experience than the kids it is also very common for it to happen if you just start out bowling.

For adults and seniors they both have just about the same statistics. For adults the highest body reigon injury is the trunk with 19.7% and the seniors it is also the trunk with 23.5%. when you bowl its really easy to pull a muscle in your trunk by just twisting the wrong way from your release. Lastly, For a mechanical injury or issues for adults it’s fell/slipped/tripped with 45.6% and with seniors is the same thing but with 72.4%. On certain bowling alleys can be more slick than others. Ive fallen many times because either I get my footing wrong or the bowing alley is slippery.

Though on a different topic there is an extensive ammount of coaching involved if you want to become a good bowler and persue farther into the game of bowling. Most people hire coaches to teach them on how to improve their game and what to do and what not to do. Though if you are lucky, you have family that are bowlers and they can just coach you for free. Even more rare you could end up teaching yourself and feed off of other bowlers and watch what they are doing to improve on what you saw. Just to make your outcome better.

It is common to see people of all ages to be coached no matter how old you are. There isnt a set age of people that can be coached like you would in like all of your major sports like baseball, football, basketball ect. In those spots its really hard to get like a really high level coach to teach a young group of kids on how to play the sport without paying a lot of money. With bowling, you can hire a coach with any level and not pay nearly as much as what you would do for the other sports. Some even do it for free just for the experience. Most coaches wouldn’t do that.

Another good reason why bowling coudld be called a sport because of the ammount of games you have to bowl depending on what type of bowling level you are in. In college and also the PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) atheletes could bowl about as many games as major leaguew baseball players do. Though it may not be as much work; but when you think about it, bowlers could bowl upwards of over 200 games or more depending on where they are placed and how they are bowling. Just imagine what that could do to your fingers, hands, arm, your body. It can be a very physical game in the long run if you are doing it right. Its been known that even the best bowlers can have a very physical beatdown with the ammount of games bowled.

When you think about it, in the PBA they have tournoments every week. So just think about the ammount of games sonmebody could bowl throughout the entire season. They could bowl hundereds upon hundereds a season. It can get really tough after a while. So I can tip my hat to the PBA because there are some very good bowlers that can battle through all of that and still become a champion at the end of the tournoments. It just amazes me the ammount of things they can do. So I hope this was able to convinve you enough to believe that bowling is truly a hardcore sport. People can compete and win and become famous and very victorious if they go through all of that and end up winning every Saturday or Sunday depending on the tournament.

Analysis essay

One day I watched a movie called 300. I personally thought it was one of the greatest movies I’ve ever watched. One of the main characters King Leonidas; He was the leader of the Spartans. They traveled across the ocean to take part in a battle against the Persians. However, they were fairly outnumbered 300 Spartans to over 300,000 Persian soldiers. As you can tell, you may think they are massively outnumbered. As King Leonidas said many times “Prepare for Glory” (Director Zack Snyder, 300). The Spartans had a myth where no matter what goes on you will always be victorious. The Spartans and Persians never really could get along. They had constant battles and wars but the Spartans could never really succeed. Though the battle for the land; was one of the biggest wars in history at that time. They made the movie seem very action packed and it’s very entertaining to watch. Whenever they start battle they went through many battles before attacking the Persians. Whenever they were caught off guard they had gotten attacked. The Spartans started with over 500 Warriors but through the way, they lost over 200 men. It all started when King Leonidas was young and the Persians took his father and cut his head off right in front of him. It had so much blood, gore, and violence. “the look and feel of this historic battle is perfect for the virtual backgrounds and obscene violence” (Jeff Bayer, Scorecard Review, Rottentomatoes.com). During the movie when they battled all you would see are spears going through bodies, heads being chopped off, and horses getting killed. One of the craziest scenes is when off in the distance, there were thousands of Persian warriors and next thing you know, they throw their spears and the sky just got dark. They obviously shielded themselves but the Spartans made a big formatting with their shields and just a shower of spears came crashing down on them. It was one of the most epic battles yet. After the spears came crashing down on them, they charged and there was nothing but blood and gore. Heads were being chopped off, Warriors getting stabbed, sliced, and killed. A big turning point is where one of King Leonidas main leader was captured right before the battle ended and King Leonidas couldn’t do anything because he was held back. One of the Persian warriors decapitated him right in front of him. It instantly reminded him of what happened to his dad when he was a kid. He lost it, he broke from the restraints from the Persians, stabbed one in the heart and the other one got his head cut off. Though it was too late the guy who decapitated one of his leaders fled from the battle and he was left their helpless. King Leonidas would soon have his revenge. As the Persians retreated after each attack they Spartans would move forward. Then as soon as they were caught off guard they were attacked again, and again. Soon they were able to make it to the shore where they camped out just outside the Persian Kingdom border. The Spartans often times traveled into the Persian Land to make offerings. During the beginning of the movie King Leonidas spotted a beautiful Queen by the name of Queen Gorgo. She was the queen of the Persians. So often, when the Spartan soldiers would go into Persian territories and make a peace toward each other, but in return they ended up battling monsters, and Persian Warriors. There were times where Queen Gorgo would sneak out of Persian territories and go see King Leonidas. There were Persian warriors spying on the mall the time. One night, a Persian warrior Spotted Queen Gorgo going into King Leonidas tent. The king of Persia didn’t like that and about a couple of days later the Persians came back to attack multiple times. Though some Persians weren’t as sneaky, some were caught and burned alive by the Spartans. Though one night, the Persians had a great plan of destroying the Spartans camp site. They had boulders, Flaming arrows, and spears. The Persians went all out on the last and final attack before the ending of the movie. Their campsite almost completely destroyed so the Spartans had to be very strategic about what they will do next, or will have to do. The Spartans gave the Persians one last and final offer and they refused. The Spartans plan was to get into the Persian kingdom and completely destroy the entire city. So they had to think long and hard about what they were going to do. It finally hit them. They thought of something that nobody in the history has ever done before. They offered the Persians a big gift, a giant wooden horse. You wouldn’t expect anything suspicious about a giant wooden horse right? Over 150 Spartan soldiers were hidden inside that wooden horse. They waited until nightfall before they would unleash on of the most epic and historic battles yet. The Spartans busted out of the horse catching the Persians completely off guard. The rest of the Spartans broke down the door and the battle began. Innocent Persian Civilians getting killed, Persian Warriors getting killed, The Spartans unleashed a massive wave of flaming arrows and boulders; which came crashing down on the city. Person after person getting killed. The King of Persia Tried to escape but his guards were killed and he had no choice but to surrender. The king of Persia gave up and let the Spartans win. Compared to over 300,000 Persian warriors to only 300 Spartan warriors it’s really hard to believe. It did really happen. The Spartans Caught the Persians so off guard they didn’t have enough time to respond and the Spartans completely destroyed them. Once they had the King of Persia the Spartans went back to their land and they have what they call “The Pit of Doom”. They tied the king up and King Leonidas delivers the best line in the entire movie “THIS IS SPARTA!!” and he kicked the king down the pit of doom and the king had died. If I were to honestly rate this movie I would give it a 5-5 starts. It is one of the greatest movies I have ever watched. I don’t think the movie will ever get old. By far, one of the best movies out there to date.

English Response Essay

One day I was reading an article on the Columbus Dispatch about a man abusing his animals. The guy had raised farm animals all of his life and he was a 3rd generation farmer. He raised cows, horses, chickens, and sheep. Everybody who knew that guy said he was somewhat of a belligerent man. His name was Billy Joe Gregg Jr. He was most notorious for abusing cows.
So one day Billy was caught doing it at a Union County Dairy Farm. He was abusing cows that he did not own. He was charged with Animal Abuse and was plead guilty of the charge. Though if I'm correct he didn't really spend much time in jail. I believe That he only spend about 5 months in jail when he was suppose to be in jail for about 1 years.
I truly cant believe that people like that are out there. It makes me so angry that people just like Billy would go out and abuse animals that weren't even his. They say that he was a coworker and somebody that was there working with him videotaped him abusing the cows and basically killing some of them. Its so sickening. To think about how many people could be out there like that. I am personally completely against animal abuse and really any type of abuse. Though animal abuse is really the one I'm most against.
Growing up with animals my entire life you grow a type of bond with them that is unbreakable. You would never do anything to hurt animals or pets or even your own pets. What I truly believe in is probably not what all people think and it may be a little extreme but, I believe people who abuse animals should be put away for a very long time. Just like I think of people abusing kids or their loved ones. I feel personally they should be locked out for a very long time.
It just really amazes me that anybody would even dare touch an animal like Billy has done. If I ever see somebody doing that to an animal of any type I would get so mad. I would do anything in my will power to stop that from happening. Because I think its just unbelievable. Who in the right mind will do something like that to somebody else's animals? What would you do if you came up to somebody and you caught them abusing animals. You're animals, the animals that you raised and grew up with. I bet you would feel the same that I do.
I would never want to walk in or just witness it while I could be out somewhere or I just see it off in the distance. Most people im sure would hate that and never want to witness something as terrible and heartless and animals being abused. I know that child abuse and other topics like that are really serious. I understand that, but this is a topic that doesn't really come up very often in central Ohio and I think it should be opinionated and should have people speak about what they think. Im doing it right now because I think its an important topic to me. I love animals and I don't know what I would do without them. I have two dogs and one cat and I would never do anything to them that would hurt them in anyway possible.
I feel terrible for all of the animals, farm animals, domestic animals that have to go through something like that. Animal abuse is just as bad as human abuse. It should be hit just as hard if it happens. I would hope for anybody that reads this that they agree with me and they think that animal abuse is just as bad a human abuse. Some may agree, some may disagree and that alright I can understand. The reason why I'm doing this is to make animal abuse a bigger topic than what it really is.
For Billy Joe Gregg Jr. he is one of the possible thousands of people that do that. though he was one that was caught in the act. Not very many people do. I'm not just talking about people in the United States but people all around the world could be doing it. Its just so terrible thinking about how many people could be doing that. I just hope that one day this will all stop and animal abuse would be a thing of that past. I know that asking for a lot but I'm just hoping it does. I just think in all honesty that it would make the world a better place. Even stopping human abuse will make the world a lot better because there wouldn't be as much drama or bad things going on in our world.
This is my strongest opinion on what I think about Animal Abuse. I don't mean to offend anybody in any way. I just want to throw my opinion and thoughts about what I think about it. I think it should stop completely before more and more people start doing it. Because I know that eventually more people could start doing it and it could turn really bad. So I'm hoping that if anybody reads this they could somewhat agree with me on what I'm trying to say because its something that I strongly feel about and I think it should stop.
Billy Joe Gregg Jr. should have been in trouble for a lot more than what he was accused for. I think he should have served more time in jail and made sure he knew the things he did to those cows was wrong and should never in his life do it again. my opinion may be strong but its true and it comes from my heart and I hope everyone can understand that. That is my full entire opinion on what I think about animal abuse and what I think should happen. I am extremely against any type of abuse because doing that kind of things kill animals, kill people, it could even worsen our population because of the lack of food supplies of meat.

narrative

One beautiful mild fall day on October 15th, 2011 it woke up feeling good, refreshed, and ready to go. Later on that morning I went and bowled in my Saturday morning bowling league. I had a great mindset that I will bowl very well that day. While driving with my mom to Mechanicsburg, I had my earphones in and I was listening to my favorite song "Remember The Name" by Fort Minor. I was feeling really good and I was exited to for bowling today.
Of course like always I was early. I found my lane and I put my bowling balls up on the return rack. The bowling league usually every Saturday morning would start at 9am. I usually would get there between 8:30 - 8:45 and get myself prepared to get ready to bowl. While I sit there waiting for people to show up, slowly, one after another people started coming in. my teammates Cole Smith, Timmy Nawman, and Makayla Smith all were finally here. We were facing another team that only had two different players on it so we were all assuming it was going to go by fairly quick.
9am rolls around and we all start practice or warm ups. Practice lasts for generally around 15 to 20 minutes long. Every single ball I either rolled a split or I spared. I never had a strike during practice. So I started loosing a little bit of confidence and I started thinking that this may not be my day. It good that I was making my spares but I left a lot of splits. So I wasn't sure if it was my release point, my approach, or I kept missing my mark. when I was practicing everything seemed just fine but I was stumped on why nothing was going my way.
so the first game started and I started off with a 189. that wasn't too bad. I started gaining my confidence back up. my average before we started that day was a 185. so the 189 will help me out with my average a lot. The higher the average the better. So then we started the second game, that game didn't end up being so good I ended up with a 168. I had no idea what had happened that game. I still had the confidence that maybe I will bowl a great game today. Well, it happened I bowled a 289 my 3rd and final game of the day.
The 3rd game I started off with the first 10 strikes. The extreme pressure was on. Everybody that was there stopped what they were doing and watched me bowl my 11th shot in the 10th frame. it was dead silent, you could head a pin drop on the ground it was so quiet. then coming up to my 11th shot I knew the pressure was on. my heart was pounding, everything was silent, I was focused a ready to roll the shot. As I start my first step there was not a sound but my feet touching the ground. my second step hit, third step, fourth, fifth. then came one of the most important rolls I could ever do to set me up for a 300 game. As I was about to roll the ball somebody in the far back coughed and I jumped a little bit because it broke my focus. When I released it, I knelt down because either this shot was perfect or it was going to end up bad and end my perfect game.
as the ball was rolling down the lane my heart felt like I was pumping out of my chest. I Was so anxious, nervous, I had sweaty palms, my ball hit the pocket perfectly only to leave the 4 pin wobbling back and fourth. I couldn't believe it, it was just wobbling back and fourth almost about to fall down then the pin setter came down and stopped it from falling down. There It was, the pin standing there mocking me, laughing at me. I was so upset but yet at the same time I was so happy because it was the best game I ever bowled. I ended up picking up the spare for an amazing 289 game. Still to this day I have not been able to reach that same score. the next closest I was able to bowl was a 268. Even though somebody coughed and made me loose my focus I still am happy about that because it was a milestone that I wanted to reach for such a long time. I know that someday hopefully I will be able to reach the milestone of the 300 game. it will just take time.
